Expression Strikes Again!

April 22, 2008 · No Comments

This Friday, Mayorga Coffee Factory will be “the place to be.” We will have live music from the guest band, Verse20. This month’s Expression will be hosted by comedian, Byword Smtih. Some of the DC area’s finest poets will be in the house once again. It’s great to see how everyone comes together every month to create a portrait of beauty. If you plan on signing up for our open mic and canvas, you may want to arrive a bit early. We’ve been having a lot of individuals coming out to display their talent. See you then!

I knew that this past Expression would be explosive, but I had no idea it would be this huge!  It was our highest attended Expression thus far.  There was over 150 people in the room when we did a head count.  Mayorga Coffee Factory literally ran out of extra chairs.  It was standing wall only!  Tre Thomas did a great job as the MC.  Major props to Komplex, 13 of Nazareth, Tina Williams, Glen Taylor, Girlz Rule, Daphne Charles, and all the other poets and artists that participated.  As expected, Ndelible turned it out.  We have another great live band coming up in April.  Stay tuned for more details and up coming photos.

The next Expression will be on Friday, March 28, 2008.  Our featured guest band will be Ndelible.  If you haven’t yet heard, you are in for treat.  They recently did a performance at Zanzibar and we have the honors of having them at Expression.  Make sure you get there early.  I’ve got a feeling this month is going to be explosive.

Cold on the Outside, Hot on the Inside

We had a blast at Expression last night. At around 7:45pm, we came to the conclusion that people decided to stay home because of the inclement weather. Boy, were we wrong! Despite of the ice and rain, you decided to pack the house out on Friday! Itohan sparked the night with two poetry pieces. Tre Thomas then gave three original R&B urban selections. (Watch out NeYo!) He also closed out the night with a rendition of More Than Anything, a powerful gospel number. Pascal, a Haitan artist who lives all the way in Canada, was our featured painter. Three other incredible artists, including Al Lowe, did some amazing oil pastel drawings. Wow! Were they incredible. Glenn introduced many of us to KRUMP dancing. Prior to dancing, he did a spoken word selection based on the dance. Big Homey also swung through for our open mic session. Aaron, Jessica, and the crew from Seven Spot swung and participated for the first time. The biggest surprise of the night was Hans who did spoken word for the first time in his life and literally killed the mic! Our sound guy, Marc Ware, came through for us big time the day before the event. We appreciate your service, bro. I’ve got to say this. I was truly encouraged by the large amount of male participation this month. The guys truly represented! To all the other poets, musicians, artists, and attenders thank you for pressing through to make Expression February a success. Stay tuned! We will announce our special musical artist for March. Trust me! You do not want to miss Expression on March 28, 2008. I’m telling you! Mark your calendar from now!

Expression Goes On!

February 22, 2008 · 1 Comment

1.jpgJust in case you’re wondering, Expression is still on for tonight.  The winter storm advisory has been lifted!  I know many of you are looking forward to it (and we are, too)!  We are going to press forward and have a great time.  Be careful out there.  Things can still be a bit slippery.  Don’t worry.  There’ll be plenty of warm coffee, teas, and lattes to help you defrost.
